one of the world's greatest snd beat
lo ed concert artiats, died here last
week.
She wsa Mrs. Ann P. Anderson,
mother of the great contralto Mar-
ian Anderson, the first Negro to
sing at the Metropolitan Opera House
uud the recipient of 24 honorary de-
grees.
Kites for Mrs. Anderson were held
at Ti lid ley Temple church.
Mrs. Anna Anderson waa a long-
time Philadelphia resident. She moved
here shortly after marrying her hua-
band. John, an ice and coal dealer
in South Philadelphia. Prior to com-
ing here. Mia. Anderson, the former
Anna 1». Kueker. taught school in her
nutive Lynchburg. Va.
Shortly afte* the family moved
here. Mrs. Anderson's huabaad died
and she waa forced to support her-
self and her three daughters hy tak-
ing iu washing aud ironing. Her
teaching certificate bnd been de.
atroyed in a fire that destroved their
home abortly after the birth of her
third daughter—Marian.
Marian's first in'roduction to
singing w is made possible by her
